Making Homes and Businesses Accessible: Essential Tips from Access Consultant Bianca

Accessibility is more than just a buzzword—it’s a crucial aspect of modern design that ensures spaces are welcoming and functional for everyone, regardless of their physical abilities. In a recent episode of the Building Design, Prime Time Podcast, Access Consultant Bianca joined host Amelia to discuss the importance of accessibility in homes and businesses. This article will explore key takeaways from the episode and provide actionable tips for integrating accessibility into your next project.

Why Accessibility Matters

Incorporating accessibility into homes and businesses is essential for creating inclusive environments. Whether you’re designing a new space or renovating an existing one, accessibility features not only enhance the usability of the space but also increase its value and appeal. Bianca emphasised that accessibility should be considered from the outset, ensuring that everyone, from elderly individuals to those with disabilities, can navigate and enjoy the space comfortably. Most notably, Tasmania will be adopting the Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB) Livable Housing Design Standards (LHDS) that is due to be introduced from October 2024 as part of changes to the National Construction Code (NCC).

Key Considerations for Accessible Design:

  1. Entrances and Exits: Ensure that entrances are step-free and wide enough to accommodate wheelchairs and mobility aids. Ramps, wide doors, and handrails are some features that make access easier.
  2. Interior Layout: Open floor plans are ideal for accessibility, allowing for smooth movement throughout the space. Pay attention to door widths, corridor spacing, and the placement of furniture to avoid obstacles.
  3. Bathroom Accessibility: Accessible bathrooms are a must in both homes and businesses. Consider installing or allowing for future installation of grab rails, walk-in showers, to cater to a variety of needs.

The Future of Accessible Design

As our population ages, the demand for accessible homes and businesses will only grow. Incorporating accessibility into your projects now ensures they are future-proofed and appeal to a broader audience. Bianca concluded the podcast by highlighting the growing importance of universal design—creating spaces that are inherently accessible to all people.

Accessibility is not just a legal requirement; it’s a design choice that benefits everyone. By incorporating the tips discussed in the episode of the Building Design, Prime Time Podcast, you can create spaces that are welcoming, functional, and inclusive.
